The tiny house movement has yielded some pretty incredible feats of wonder in recent years — be it the nation’s oldest shopping mall converted to micro-living apartments or a miniature village of teeny homes for a city’s homeless population. But the tiny home in the video below has a story unlike anything we’ve yet heard.
Kelley Lewis is a single mother who was left to care for her three children all on her own. Facing an increased financial burden and a need to rebuild her life from the ground up, she did exactly that. She built herself a 192 square foot tiny home.
Besides the framing, with which she had some additional help, Kelley has build out every facet of the home herself, from insulation to most of the electric to the paint on the walls — it was all Kelley. “There was no computer, there was nothing,” she says. “I literally used a ruler and a pencil with a good eraser.” What’s more, she used primarily recycled materials.
“I think a lot of people, especially in today’s society, always want more — something bigger and better. I’m guilty of it too, but if it takes away from you appreciating the smaller things and the things that you do have, I think that’s where there’s a disservice.” And her kids are learning all this from mom.
